Common reasons parents bring their baby to see us
Head turning preference: Consistently favouring one side may indicate neck or upper spine tension that affects feeding, tummy time and comfort.
Feeding difficulties: Neck restriction can make it harder for a baby to feed evenly from both sides. We may work alongside lactation consultants where appropriate.
Unsettled behaviour and colic: Persistent crying, back arching or difficulty settling may sometimes involve musculoskeletal tension. We assess this carefully and refer when other care is more suitable.
Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome): Flat spots often develop alongside a positional preference. Addressing the underlying restriction early may help prevent it from becoming more established.
Post-birth tension: Birth can place strain on a baby’s neck and spine, particularly after instrumental delivery or prolonged labour. An early check can assess whether they are moving freely and comfortably.
What to expect at your baby's appointment?
A first appointment at Tan Chiro starts with a thorough history. We want to understand the pregnancy and birth, how your baby is feeding, sleeping and moving and exactly what is prompting you to come in.
The assessment is hands-on but very gentle. We observe how your baby holds themselves, moves and responds to touch and carefully assess the spine, neck, pelvis and surrounding muscles for any restriction or asymmetry.
If care is appropriate, treatment uses extremely light-contact techniques adapted to your baby's age and size. The level of pressure involved is often described as similar to the pressure you might use to test the ripeness of a piece of fruit. If care is not appropriate, we will tell you clearly and help you find the right next step.
Is chiropractic care safe for babies?
Yes, when performed by a chiropractor with appropriate paediatric training. A 2015 systematic review in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found no deaths recorded in research associated with chiropractic care in infants and children and noted that serious adverse events are rare.
